I read in a magazine once how a family bought three gifts for their children for Christmas. This mimiced the three gifts the wisemen brought Jesus. In choosing the gifts they had one be something the child really needed, one thing the child really wanted and then one thing that would make family time happen (tickets to a mvie, a board game, or something that would give the child something special to do with a parent). I loved this idea and have used it with ellie every year. We give her 3 gifts and Sant always brings a few but I look forward to keeping a small message of what Christmas is really about, Jesus' birth.
I made a few fleece tie-blankets for my brothers in the colors of their favorite sports teams this year! Another low-cost thing I've done is giving a certificate to take people out to dinner. They can use it whenever , and wherever, and you're really giving the gift of time together along with the $. Better than a gift card, AND you don't have to spend the money right then- you pay when the dinner comes! I pretty much do this with my grandparents every year, to get special time together. Hope this helps!
